Concluding this review, I can say that WRC 9 is a brilliant experience on both the PS5 and the Xbox Series consoles. Realistic, beautiful cars are well rendered and, depending on the view taken, weather effects are too. All this is accomplished while keeping the frame rate above the mandatory 60 fps for racing games in order to keep input responses of the game in sync with your driving inputs. Co-drivers call out the pace notes on every course, which describe what turns are coming up. It’s a coding balancing act between those two forces. Speaking of support, the co-drivers have been improved this year. From a design perspective this simplifies things and allows the freed up game overhead of not showing a multi-car on-screen moment to be used for frame rate optimization and the overall racing environment. Several great new rallies have been added and it does feel like there’s been a bit of massaging. Racing through the dirt tracks offered some stunning lighting effects (and the replay videos capture the. Rally racing is unique from most racing where the focus is on a single car. In comparison to last year’s big jump in quality with WRC 8, WRC 9 is a more modest lurch forwards. First off, the visuals on the PS5 are something else. VR racers will also be disappointed to find that no VR support has been added.
The graphics from WRC 8 return so the game continues to look great but I could’t see any improvements from WRC 8.
